Banderas, 48, tonight also presented his film Summer Rain (El camino de los ingleses) that he directed and that won the Europa Cinemas Label at the Berlinale International Film Festival in 2007.
He told reporters before the screening that the film was his attempt to break free from the U.S. environment and return to his roots in Spanish Malaga.
However, he added that next time he would probably choose a more commercial genre as a director. He said he would like to direct a historical film about an Arabic ruler if he gained finances for it.
Banderas has become famous for his roles in a number of American films, such as Philadelphia (1993), Desperado (1995), musical Evita (1996) and mainly the Hollywood blockbusters - The Mask of Zorro (1998) and The Legend of Zorro (2005).
He reminded that it was the leading role in Zorro, produced by Steven Spielberg, that catapulted him among the biggest stars in Hollywood.
As a Spanish actor, Banderas first gained a wide attention in a series of films by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar in the 1980s.
Asked why he has not cooperated with Almodovar for long, he said he rejected two of his offers in the past and the director might not like it. However he added he is prepared to work with Almodovar again any time.
Banderas will soon appear in a new film directed by Woody Allen, along with Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin.
At a press conference in Karlovy Vary, Banderas said he really loves Prague.
He recollected his first stay in Prague in 1992 when he was "a shooting film star." He spent seven months in Prague, Plzen, west Bohemia, and even in Karlovy Vary shooting a series about young Mussolini.
Banderas said when taking over the festival award this evening he fell in love with the country, people as well as culture then.
He greeted the audiences with the Czech equivalent of "Good evening."
Banderas's wife, U.S. actress Melanie Griffith, 51, did not accompany him in Karlovy Vary. He said she would like to visit the festival very much but she had to look after their child.
